International Day of Radiology 2017 to focus on emergency radiology

Monday, October 2, 2017 (ESR, Vienna) – The International Day of Radiology (IDoR) will be celebrated for the sixth time on November 8, this year focusing on emergency radiology.

As in previous years, more than 150 radiology-related professional societies from around the world will participate in the International Day of Radiology, holding a range of different events to celebrate, such as public lectures, department open days, national media appearances, and press events. Following on from recent themes such as paediatric imaging and breast imaging, this year the focus will be on radiology in emergency settings.

The ISR and the ESR are represented at today’s IAEA Scientific Forum in the session “Looking beyond the visible: New frontiers in diagnostic techniques” highlighting how member states can maximise the impact of cutting-edge imaging technologies.

Prof. Luis Donoso, ISR President-Elect and former ESR President, emphasised the importance of investing in education and quality equipment as well as of promoting a patient safety culture and teamwork approach in order to leverage the full potential of modern diagnostic imaging.

The ISR participated in the WHO consultation on the thirteenth General Programme of Work 2019 - 2023

The ISR participated in the WHO consultation on the thirteenth General Programme of Work 2019 - 2023 and submitted a statement in October, emphasising that medical imaging plays a strong role in many of the WHO’s strategic priorities.

The ISR statement highlights the need for universal access to imaging for communicable diseases, non-communicable diseases as well as for emergencies and advocates the establishment of a global plan for medical imaging covering equipment and health workforce aspects, implemented through regional centres of excellence.

ISR called for global imaging equipment plan in developing countries and for good practice in ultrasound probe cleaning at 3rd WHO Global Forum on Medical Devices 16 May 2017

The ISR, represented by ISRQSA Co-Chair Prof. Guy Frija, hosted two successful workshops on the occasion of the 3rd WHO Global Forum on Medical Devices in Geneva on May 10.

In a joint workshop with the International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP), and the International Society of Radiographers and Radiological Technologists (ISRRT), the ISR gave recommendations for a global plan for the development of Medical Imaging in developing countries, including the adoption and adaptation of a regulatory framework inspired by the IAEA BSS or the European BSS Directive, focus on strategic issues like justification, optimization, equipment quality, occupational exposures; as well as the use of new concepts such as Clinical Decision Support and clinically-based Diagnostic Reference Levels.

The importance of developing regional campaigns such as Eurosafe Imaging, Image Gently, AfroSafe, ArabSafe, etc. was emphasised.
